We Do as Children Do

Text:           I John 3.4-8
Theme:        To realize and appreciate that Christians are children of God
Purpose:     Develop how we should live as children of God

1 John 3.4Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning.

Sin is often referred to as rejection of Christ. But we also read in verse 8 that sin is failure to practice faith. But children of God don’t continue sinning. We may sin, miss the mark, but we don’t keep on sinning. Matthew Henry writes, He that does right is right, and to be a follower of Christ. To be born of God is to be inwardly renewed by the power of the Spirit of God.

It is not that he has no sin in him, or lives without sin, but he does not live in sin, nor give up himself to sin. Stop it! Do the right thing. But being a child of God also is having the works of the devil destroyed.

Let the Destroyer Destroy

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Let us not serve or indulge what the Son of God came to destroy (Henry). So when we sin, remember, the reason the Son of God came the first time was to destroy the works of the devil. The next time someone tells you that you are not a child of God remember for this reason the Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil. The next time evil raises its ugly head, remember for this reason the Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil. The next time you want to say the devil made me do it, remember for this reason the Son of God appeared to destroy the works of the devil.

There is a devil and yes there is evil, but the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. We are the Children of God. We do as on Christ the Solid Rock I stand. Edward Mote, c.1834 wrote: My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.

Israel Houghton wrote: You gave me courage to believe that all your goodness I will see and if it had not been for You Standing on my side, where would I be?

If not for your goodness, if not for your grace

I don’t know where I would be today

If not for your kindness, I never could say

I’m still standing

If not for your mercy, if not for your love

I most likely would have given up

If not for your favor, I never could say

I’m still standing, but by the grace of God
