Wisdom for Daily Living (Part 2)

Ecclesiasstes 12.13

The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

The preacher argued that if life has no purpose or meaning, then what are we doing here? Why go on living at all? We can only find joy in life by looking to our Creator and by obeying Him all the days of our lives (Swindoll). All the preachers’ thoughts and reflections have led to this truth: life’s meaning is found in God alone (FCA).

Fear God (12.13-14)

The fear of God includes in it all the affections of the soul towards him, which are produced by the Holy Spirit (Matthew Henry). Fear is reverence. Remember who God is. Respect who God is.

Matthew 10.28: And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

It all comes down to knowing Him and loving Him. Fear His Word.

Ecclesiastes 12.11: The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd.

Matthew Henry wrote, “It means to establish the heart.” This is the whole duty of man. This is the expectations. God’s commands provide all the meaning and truth we desire (FCA). Solomon called into question the most basic issues of existence. The man kept a journal of his journey and it is not only the story of one man’s experience but of all who attempt to live their lives apart from God (Swindoll).
